Geography Of Panchayat
Geographical Features of Vijayapuram Grama Panchayat
Vijayapuram Grama Panchayat is a region blessed with picturesque natural landscapes. Its distinctive features include rivers, streams, small hills, vast paddy fields, fertile rice-growing lands, and coconut groves. The Meenachil River, Kodoor River, and Meenanthara River flow through the Panchayat, adding to its natural beauty and ecological significance. In addition, several large canals and streams are characteristic features of the area.
One of the most remarkable landmarks is the Kanjikkuzhi Canal, a man-made waterway constructed during the princely era. It was built to divert water from the Meenanthara River to the paddy fields of the Manganam region. Even today, this canal stands as a monument to human ingenuity and hard work, continuing to facilitate the flow of water for irrigation purposes.
The rivers of the Panchayat are rich in water resources and support abundant fish populations. Fishing in these riverbanks during the monsoon season has traditionally been a festive and community-oriented activity. In earlier times, these waterways also served as important transport routes, with cargo being carried in country boats through the canals. Many of these large canals have survived the passage of time and continue to exist today.
Over the years, paddy cultivation has declined due to various reasons. However, regions such as Manganam, Nattassery, and Ponpally continue to be important rice-producing areas. The introduction of modern agricultural technologies, improved seed varieties, and active support from government agencies has helped sustain paddy cultivation, though not at the scale seen in earlier decades.
In the past, traditional devices such as Petti and Para were used to drain excess water from paddy fields before cultivation. Although these methods are no longer widely used, the platforms and structures associated with them still remain along the bunds of many paddy fields as historical reminders of traditional agricultural practices.
The eastern part of the Panchayat generally consists of elevated terrain. While these areas are less prone to flooding, they possess fertile soil that is highly suitable for a variety of agricultural activities. The Panchayat actively promotes dairy farming, poultry farming, and aquaculture, and as a result, significant growth in production has been achieved in these sectors as well.
Overall, Vijayapuram Grama Panchayat represents a harmonious blend of natural resources, agricultural heritage, and sustainable development initiatives, making it a unique and vibrant region within Kottayam District.
